My students need 1" Simply Economy View Binders, foam dice, sand timers and sensory fidgets to practice reading, writing, and math by themselves and with each other.
Third grade students love to learn! They are active, curious, and creative thinkers. I am excited to meet my class in the fall and hope to greet them with a classroom learning environment that provides a variety of seating spaces for individual student work and a gathering area for whole and small group lessons. Part of flexible seating means storing student materials in common areas instead of individual desks.
Third graders thrive on making their own choices in the classroom each day both in terms of where they sit and how they learn.
Students in my class direct much of their own learning each day by choosing where to work and cycling through a series of whole group mini lessons and independent work sessions in reading, writing, and math. They choose what type of work they will do in each session and work to build their stamina to read, write, or do math for longer intervals independently. The ability to choose what they will do next motivates and inspires students to work hard and learn more.
My Project
Students will practice math by themselves, math with someone, and math writing each day. The 1" Simply Economy Binders and foam dice will help each student practice independently and quietly. The binders will hold math games related to what we are learning in class. Each activity will be in a sheet protector and students will use dry erase markers to complete them. Foam dice help keep math practice quiet and contained. The dice and binders will help classes for several years with care.
Sand timers and sensory fidgets support those students who need concentration breaks in their reading, writing, and math stamina.
The sand timers differ in interval so students start with breaks at the longer intervals (3 minutes) and work their way down to smaller amounts of time (30 seconds). Students will have a choice of different sensory items for their concentration break including the rings and tangles in this request and other items I have in the classroom. I will coach them along each step of the way so students are assured of success with the process!
