My Students
The school that I teach at is located in Southeast TX and we are a Title I middle school that service 1000+ students. Our students receive 100% free lunch. We are a unique demographic that consists of many different ethnicities. We have students who come from different countries speaking their native tongue, not understanding the language in where they reside, which makes it difficult for them to keep up with their peers. However, some of them do succeed and teach their parents how to speak English.
Every year we do projects where we use math as a hands on activity.
For example, we create monsters using fraction pieces and surveying using bar graphs and pie charts. I use these projects as a basis for allowing students to understand how we use math in every day life. Also, the project helps them learn how to work in a group and how to practice giving a presentation.
My Project
For the math based projects, I have the students to do their projects on posters, so that it can be nice and neat and can be easily seen outside of the classrooms. I have them use markers and glitter markers to help decorate their project to make a statement. The students use scissors and glue to cut and paste objects that they want to put on their posters.
For the survey project, the students have to create a pie chart for their poster.
The protractors will help the students draw the perfect circle for their graph. Our class uses pencils not only to calculate math problems for the project but to trace before using the markers to darken it.
