Help me give my students the ability to have Math at their hands with new technology!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a teacher at an inner city school in Miami Fl, nestled in small community. My school includes grades from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade, has a large ESOL population of greater than 85%. A large majority of our students are from Haiti and their parents have difficulty providing students with basic school materials. I am a Middle Grades Mathematics teacher and currently teach grades 6-8 mathematics courses. My students vary in their mathematical abilities, some do to the different teaching in their country, others do to lack of mathematics conceptual understanding and also language barriers . My students are eager and love to learn, in order to meet the needs of my students I utilize various teaching and learning strategies, such as group work, and alternative seating and a variety of learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met at their level. My students always surprises me with how persistent they are and their willingness to learn and understand the content.
The use of technology is used daily in my classroom, by teacher and students whether it be by way of Teacher desktop and interactive smart board. We have limited resources when it comes to technology in my class and my students do not have access to technology at home. Because my students vary in their mathematics ability accessing technology enhance lessons are critical to enhance their learning and understanding of their grade level mathematics content. Currently I utilize three online programs in the teaching and learning of middle grades mathematics to address the vary abilities of my students along with small group explicit teaching. Due to lack of access my students have to technology (computers/laptops, tablets or smart phones) it has been proven difficulty to address student educational needs.
By donating laptops to my class students will be able to rotate in groups in 5 to use laptops to access technology enhanced assignments, that allows students to see math in various ways that make connections to life and the real-world, virtually manipulate models that will build and increase students' conceptual understanding and increase their academic success in mathematics.
Students will always question in mathematics "when will I ever use this." Students will now be able to understand how mathematics is used outside of the classroom, and how they will use it in their lives.
