Yay! We have a new adopted math program. Oh no! My students aren't yet skilled enough to be successful during my math period! It's clear that I will not need to teach one daily math lesson this year, but 3 lessons each day. In order to make this happen, I will need to teach small math groups.
My darling students are from mixed cultures, backgrounds, and income levels.
Our school is truly a unique kindergarten through eighth grade site, located in sunny California. We have 27 students per classroom. Many of my students are from the local neighborhood, but a large group of them are also immigrants and "overloaded" from neighboring schools. They are working to catch up academically and some are also learning English at the same time! This presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to develop learning relationships with many friends throughout the year.
My Project
With the addition of the requested math materials, including privacy partitions, jumbo magnetic numbers, and jumbo ten-frames, students will be able to work independently at math time. I will be able to teach small groups of around 8 students while the rest of the class works on various, leveled activities to solidify and deepen their conceptual math understanding. In addition to the math skills that they will strengthen, they will also further their ability to collaborate with their peers as they work together to complete independent activities.
My students are telling me, " I love math," and "I want to do more math!" I'm so pleased that they are enjoying my favorite subject, math.
I am also thrilled that they feel good about math instruction. However, I know that everything I am teaching right now is a review of what the students should already know. They are truly learning these skills for the first time. The curriculum will become much more rigorous soon! Thank you for helping me to keep my students loving math!
