Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse kids from different countries in Latin America. Our school is located in a low-income area in Texas, and over 90% of the school's population is economically disadvantaged. My students are all bilingual students who are still recovering from the devastation that was caused earlier last year by Hurricane Harvey. Not many of them were directly affected by the hurricane, but a few students did experience flooding and were forced to move to a different apartment. Because of the trauma they have experienced, I want to create an environment where they feel safe. I want them to look forward to coming to school and to feel completely engaged in all the learning activities.
My Project
Math is more engaging for students when they can work with manipulatives. For many, virtual manipulatives are even better! The iPad will help me create the perfect workstation, where students can practice independently what they are learning in Math each day. Having the opportunity to use an iPad will make my students eager to utilize the workstation. They will be motivated to perform and excited to complete assigned tasks, because it feels like playing games. In reality, they will be extending and enriching their learning, while reinforcing what was taught in class.
Apps on this iPad will also help my students bridge the gap from concrete understanding of math concepts to the abstract level.
Electronic apps offer ways for students to manipulate concrete and pictorial information in order to solidify the abstract understanding of higher-level math concepts. They can solve problems using a much more engaging medium than pencil and paper. My students will be able to take the skills they learn in class and build upon them toward mastery of their objectives.
