This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you prefer doings things with a computer, rather than by hand? So do my students! They get so excited about learning with electronic tools. Learning can be fun! When it is, students tend to want more.
The students in my classroom are native Spanish speakers, who mostly come from low socio-economic households.
Their exposure and experience with technology and innovative learning tools at home is slim to none.
My students learn Math in English, so they need opportunities to practice the Math skills and concepts learned during class, with language support. With only two 2 student computers in the classroom, which are outdated, and often out-of-order, it is hard to keep the students engaged and excited about what they are learning. Technology always gets students motivated, so they could really benefit from having iPads in the classroom.
My Project
Math is more engaging for students when they can work with manipulatives. For many, virtual manipulatives are even better! The 2 iPads will help me create the perfect workstation, where students can practice independently what they are learning in Math each day. Having the opportunity to use iPads will make my students eager to utilize the workstation. They will be motivated to perform and excited to complete assigned tasks, because it feels like playing games. In reality, they will be extending and enriching their learning, while reinforcing what was taught in class.
The iPads apps will also help my students bridge the gap from concrete understanding of math concepts to the abstract level.
Electronic apps offer ways for students to manipulate concrete and pictorial information in order to solidify the abstract understanding of higher-level math concepts. They can solve problems using a much more engaging medium than pencil and paper. My students will be able to take the skills they learn in class and build upon them toward mastery of their objectives.
