Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a low socioeconomic school. We were hit by Hurricane Harvey last year. It was a shocking event and a difficult challenge for my students. Their lives were changed drastically from one day to the next and had no idea how to cope. Many students had it more difficult than others. These students have had hard living situations that no child should never experience. This devastating event left some students coming to school without some of their basic needs being met at home such as eating their daily meals, shelter, feeling safe, and having clean clothes. They come to school to fulfill their basic needs. With all of these challenges, they still make the best of it.
My students are still trying to recover from this catastrophe.
They come to school eager to learn and to discover new adventures.
My Project
My students would love to have hands on math and science station activities to reinforce their learning. They learn best by actively being involved and engaged in their own learning. My students work daily in stations. Some great math activities for my students will the giant geometric shapes, busy bees subtraction, and roll and solve addition. The giant geometric shapes will allow my student to physically hold and see the attributes of each 3 dimensional shapes. This will allow my visual leaners to visually see the shape clearly instead of just seeing them on paper. Also the busy bees and the roll and solve addition activities will engage them to solve addition and subtraction problems in a fun and exciting way. These concepts are hard for first grade but these activities will engage them to practice the skill daily in a different way then the normal paper pencil.
All of these activities have skills that my first grader will learn and need to practice frequently.
In science, we learn about the solar system especially the moon, motion, living things, and magnetic. My students will be thrilled to use the solar system discovery board to see the differences between the planets and understand the distance between them. The living things activity will be a quick and easy way to practice sorting living and nonliving things. These are just a few concepts that are learned and these hands on activities will allow my students to be engage in their learning.
