Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss. Math and Science books are usually for presenting information. I want my kids to discover books that not only educate them, but inspire them with the beauty of the world.
I work in a fantastic middle school in Colorado where students are eager to explore the world around them.
However, though their minds are hungry to grow, the tools available to them are limited. Over 85% of the school's population is on Free and Reduced Lunch and 55% of our students are learning English as their second language. The more opportunities they get to read academic and recreational material, the better they develop their mastery language. Even those who aren't ELLs benefit from the chance to read for fun.
My Project
I've decided to build a small library of books in my classroom to encourage students to read more about Math and Science. The books I've chosen aren't as focused on learning how to do Math and Science, but where these subjects appear in the real world. They are meant to excite and inspire students. Some books tell about the math and science found in music, or the science used by Ancient Egyptians. I've chosen books that take material that I teach about outer space and the cosmos and go into further depth for those students who want to know more. Students can also read about the history of mathematicians and scientists and see how they used their knowledge to discover extraordinary things.
Though most of the class time is filled with hands on practice and exploration in Math and Science, there are occasions when a student excels in an activity and is ready to move on. These students should have the resources to continue their learning.
By donating to my project you will be helping change my student's perspective on reading math and science materials.
Through these books, we can grow more inspired and literate mathematicians and scientists. Thank you for your support!
