Our school is a public Montessori school in Alaska. Our teaching philosophy supports following the child. We strive to create a learning environment that is prepared for and centered around all of our children's interests. It is our job to help spark curiosity within our students so that they may learn to love learning. Our goal is to help mold each of our children to be life-long learners.
Our students are extraordinary because they are not afraid to be creative, to be curious, to question the world around them, to care for one another, to stand up for themselves and their peers, or to push themselves beyond their frustrations.
Due to our school being Montessori, we spend three full school years together. We have our kids from first through third grade. We have more than a teacher-student relationship; our classes become a family.
Our school serves many military families. We understand what it takes to nurture the academic and social-emotional needs of these students and families during deployment and all transitions they may experience. Our philosophy allows for military students to quickly adjust to our learning style and gives them the opportunity to explore the world around them.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in our science and cultural lessons because each of the requested items addresses how humans have evolved over time, from the Big Bang to modern day. The Vertebrates and Invertebrates sort will help the children learn about the different physical makeup of animals in the world around them and their basic needs. The Timeline of Early Humans will allow the kids to do their own research from the earliest humans to modern day humans. The Solar System Timeline will be an additional resource for the kids to use in the classroom for their research. The Bank Fetch Game will support the math skills of my youngest students; helping them to better understand composing and decomposing numbers. All of these items will help support the kids' hands-on learning and independent research in the classroom.
The resources from this project will allow my students to have more research opportunities by allowing them resources that they can use independently.
Since our students stay with us for three school years, they get to hear the timelines three years in a row; currently, we have a timeline for the Big Bang and for the Timeline of Life (how life evolved). This project will allow us to add a timeline to help better explain the evolution of humans. Every year, as the children mature and develop, they glean new knowledge from these stories. They are the core of the Montessori curriculum and create sparks of interests within the kids. These lessons are essential to our goal: create life long learners.
