I teach in a small community on the coast of North Carolina. My students come from all types of backgrounds. A good portion of the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch as well as "Backpack Blessings," which is food supplied by local churches for students over the weekend. Our county heavily supports "Stuff the Bus" and other projects that benefit our students. My community may be small but we work hard to help each other whenever needs arise.
I strive to make sure my students know that they are loved and can accomplish anything they set their minds to!
I am a kindergarten teacher and often the first "Teacher" they have ever known. I communicate with their parents daily to let them know that they are an important part of their child's education. Often these parents struggled in school and have a bad attitude towards school from prior experiences. I strongly believe that if I can include them in their child's success and maintain a positive relationship with them that I can change their thinking and highly impact the way they view education as a whole. This will greatly benefit their child!
My Project
My students need a structured math curriculum to meet the common core standards and begin building their number sense for math success in years to come. Our school already uses the Envision curriculum in grades 2-5 and I feel it would be a huge benefit to all students if we began using this curriculum in kindergarten. They would begin early building the necessary vocabulary and knowledge to help them succeed in the grades to come.
Our school does not receive enough funding to provide these books for grades K and 1.
These are consumable books and must be purchased every year. The workbooks are very helpful to the students and provide classroom practice as well as home connections to allow the parents to stay connected to their student's progress.
In addition to the math workbooks, I have asked for help with other math and science supplies that will enhance my curriculum and provide hands on learning experiences for my students.
