My students need cutting tools, T-squares, paper and paint to help them construct a scale model of a ballpark, and they need baseballs, timers, and protractors to calculate launch angles and velocity.
I work at a Title 1 school in Arizona. Most students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch every day. I am the gifted specialist at my school and I work with students in kindergarten through 5th grade.
Part of my day is dedicated to teaching math to high achieving 5th grade students.
They are hard workers and are pushing themselves each and every day. They are very talented math students and I want to give them the opportunity to apply math to real world situations, such as calculating statistics and constructing buildings.
My Project
My students are getting ready to apply the 5th grade math standards they have learned this year to a real-world math unit. They will be learning about the math involved in baseball.
As part of the unit, the students will get to construct a ballpark to scale, which involves the application of area, perimeter, and converting units of measurement.
To complete this part of the unit, the students will need T-squares, paper, cutting tools, paint, and felt.
Another topic they will look at is the launch angles of baseballs. They will need baseballs, timers, and protractors so that they can collect their own data to calculate velocity and launch angles. The students will also learn about the calculations involved in finding the statistics of baseball players. Finally, they will get to see a live baseball game and practice collecting and analyzing data by keeping score.
