The elementary is the last addition of the NP3 K-12 dream. It has been years in the making and we are proud to finally accomplish this journey.
My classroom consists of 24 happy and hard working Kindergartners who come from different backgrounds and cultures.
We are fortunate enough to have a wonderful community with supportive parents who want the best for their child and school. We are a Title 1 school where some of our students qualify for free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch. We have many English Language Learners. These are students who are learning to speak English or English is their second language.
My Project
While teaching about 2D and 3D shapes, I have noticed that learning the attributes can be confusing. Trying to learn not only the names of these shapes but also that they have sides, corners, flat faces, some can roll and slide, while others can only slide, some have curved sides, etc. is a lot for 5 and 6 year olds and especially for my English Language Learners. However, I think having this tool where they can build the shapes will help make the concepts more concrete for my students.
Not only do I want to make learning about shapes and their attributes concrete for my students, I also want to help make learning about the equal sign concrete as well.
Just seeing the equal sign is so abstract. They may learn that it means the "answer" comes after or before but having this scale will help them see that if they don't have an equal amount on both sides, their scale will not be balanced. We can then discuss adding more and taking away some to teach addition and subtraction.
