The best math lesson I ever taught this year was a lesson on fractions. I put as much effort into this lesson as to any other, but it was almost magical. My kids seemed to 'get it' faster than they had gotten any other concept all year. Why was that? Am I just a fraction WHIZ?
The answer is "The Doorbell Rang" by Pat Hutchins, a story about a brother and a sister whose mother has just made 12 chocolate chip cookies. Just as they figure out how many cookies they each get, a friend rings the doorbell and the twelve cookies have to be split 3 ways. The doorbell keeps ringing until the twelve cookies are being split evenly by 12 kids. Fractions are somewhat difficult for 2nd graders, but "The Doorbell Rang" brought them to life and made them make sense.
This is an experience I would like to replicate throughout my math instruction next year. Luckily, my math curriculum has recommended books to go along with specific lessons. I would love to have these for read alouds for my classroom library, to help make math come alive through literature.
