Requested Materials: 50 Barron's "Let's Review" for the Math A Exam (List Price $15.95) I teach math at a small high school called the High School for Youth and Community Development. This school is in its second year, with only two grades, and I have moved up with the students (meaning I taught ninth grade last year and this year I teach tenth grade). At the end of this year, my students will be taking the Math A Regents exam. While myself and the other teachers have been working hard to prepare them for this exam - we don't have a lot of resources for our students as we are a brand new school with limited monies to devote to purchasing books. We do not even have enough Math A textbooks at the school for the students to be able to keep one at home and also have a classroom set for classwork. In addition, all four teachers in the math department are brand new (from the NYC Teaching Fellows program) and thus we are learning what is required for the Regents while on the job. I am afraid that many of my students will not be prepared for this exam simply because the teachers do not have access to the resources needed such as real regents exam questions). Many of my students cannot afford to go buy the book themselves, and thus I do not want to make it a requirement for the class. I really want my students to be well-prepared for this exam and thus do well on it. Already many of them have built up their confidence level in math from last year simply by positive reinforcement by our teachers. Yet, they need to pass this exam to graduate from high school. If they were able to review sufficiently, I am confident my students would do extremely well.
