My school district is the 10th largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania. Due to economic status, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. In the last four years, five elementary and two high schools have closed.
Many of our students come from homes that are below the poverty rate.
Our classrooms lack basic supplies that are critical to the learning environment. Our students struggle with basic reading strategies and are below grade level. The provided reading materials are outdated, above their level, and black and white copies stapled together.
My Project
For my project, I have carefully selected games that will encourage my fifth graders to learn math stategies while playing. For example, fraction pizza and fraction dominoes will reinforce skills in an exciting way. I have also requested large sheets of dry erase mats. These paired with the Common Core task cards, will encourage the students to explain their thinking. Today pre-teens are wired differently; they need more stimulation to stay focused.
I am requesting games that will not only reinforce math skills, but also will encourage the building of social skills.
They include task cards and card games. The students will need to discuss different ways of thinking, as well as practicing listening and acknowledging their peers thoughts and ideas.
These activities will encourage problem solving strategies that the students will be able to apply to any multi-step problem.
