This project is for my Math 180 students. These are students that need a little extra math help. I have to remind them almost every day how capable they are of doing higher level math. Many of these students have great math skills but have lost their confidence over the years. These students have an opportunity in my class to slow it down, work on remedial skills, and ask questions about mathematics. Students work with me for part of the class and then independently on their iPads. Math 180 is a self-paced program where students can play games and be talked through the math skills they need.
My Project
I work in a classroom nestled between the gymnasium and the cafeteria. It can get noisy in my classroom with outside noise and some students get easily distracted by these noises. In addition to this, sometimes I am working with small groups of students off to the side while other students are working independently on their iPads. Sometimes I am even teaching a mini lesson while others are on their iPad. The Math 180 program that students work on uses ALOT of audial feedback. It talks students through the problems, takes them step by step, and responds with a praise if they get answers correct and positive correction if they get it wrong. For these students who struggle with math and many have little confidence in their math skills, many of them can REALLY benefit from the simple "So close, I can tell you tried your best, let's try again". Math 180 offers these small encouragements for students. However, the students can not all hear these because with 20 students using iPads at once, they can't all have their volume up. This is why headphones are needed.
