Our class is full of 18 bright and eager learners. Despite difficult circumstances, the students get up every day to prepare for distance learning.
Together we are learning how to tackle the obstacle of the physical distance between us.
I'm doing my best to make distance learning equitable, but it is really difficult. Many students live in housing that never was adequately repaired after hurricane Irma. Families are facing job loss and an uncertain future.
Students are learning using borrowed school computers if they have internet. I have done my best to provide materials for students without technology. We talk on the phone and text message. I drive through the neighborhoods delivering what I am able. I want the children to know I'm still present, still care, and will do whatever it takes to meet their needs.
My Project
My students are really beginning to enjoy writing. Activities such as writing and illustrating stories and writing in a daily journal have helped students to become budding independent writers. Students have worked to practice letter formation, spacing and punctuation. It is very important for them to continue to practice constructing simple sentences and enjoy reading what they write.
Providing materials for students to continue to write at home will encourage them to be creative and actively engaged in the process.
Students love to use dry erase boards and markers because mistakes are so easy to fix. Having a small board and markers at home would be perfect. Providing paper scissors, glue sticks, pencils, and a sharpener will help students complete their assignments at home.
