I am a 7th and 8th grade science teacher at a Title I school where 62% of our students come from low-income families. So many of our students are deprived of many things needed to be successful students. I teach Physical and Life Science in an under-resourced classroom. For instance, my students study mathematical equations at least three times per week. I have two calculators in my classroom; one of which is my cell phone. In addition to a lack of classroom calculators, students do not complete the math portion of their homework assignments because they do not have calculators at home. Within the Phyiscal Science class, I design lab experiments that require basic things that students can find in their homes. Currently, students use computer paper stapled together to submit lab reports. I would like my students to have science composition notebooks for their lab projects. I would also like to have class sets of colored pencils so that students can distinguish their results within their data tables. For example, I assigned my students to label and draw a plant cell. Only 4 students out of 153 were able to submit drawing of a cell in color. Dictionaries are also needed for Physical Science classroom as scientific terms can appear to be another language for the students. Unfortunately, Language Arts is the only department on campus that has dictionaries. Often, I am forced to borrow a dictionary from another teacher which is difficult to do on a daily basis just so my students can look up words and learn their respective definitions. Thank you for improving the learning environment of our science class by providing these resources.
