Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a Title I public school located in Salem Oregon.
My class consists of 29 students, all of which are English Language Learners.
Due to the fact that 90% of our population lives in poverty, our entire school receives free lunch.
When the school year started, 12 of my 29 students were non-readers meaning that 41% of my class was reading below a kindergarten level.
Through hard work, dedication and interventions, I'm pleased to say that we have lowered the number from 12 non-readers to just one student.
Although my class has grown so much in the short time we have been together, we are still a very high needs class. 23 of my 29 students are still reading below a second grade level which equates to about 79% of my class.
My Project
The headphones, whiteboards, and spinners will enhance our reading groups.
Although I do have an Instructional assistant that helps me lead my reading groups, we are outnumbered.
therefore, in an effort to meet with all students while also keeping our instruction groups small, we rely on rotations.
While half of my students work with a teacher, the other half of my students are working on a computer independently on a reading intervention program. The headphones will ensure that my students can properly hear and focus on the program with minimal distractions.
The spinners will also be used by my students during our reading groups to practice their sounds and letters. The whiteboards will also be used by my students to write their reading responses as well as to practice their sight words.
