Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is composed of 15 delightful children with moderate to severe disabilities in grades TK, K, and 1st. They are learning every day how to be lifelong learners. My students are full of energy and hope. They enjoy school and being part of a school that embraces them for who they are!
My students are learning life skills now that will support them later on in life, like counting money, signs to communicate needs, and showing gratitude for those that are part of their everyday life.
I want my students to continue feeling like they are part of their community and valuable citizens. All of their achievements are celebrated and growth is abound every day!
My Project
These materials will encourage my students to use imaginative play as a way to communicate. For example, my students can practice sharing, requesting items from friends, or try to initiate a simple exchange with a friend verbally or through gestures. My students find great joy in the opportunities to interact with each other. I feel such materials like a play stove or fridge can encourage the friendly exchanges.
Many of my students are learning how to communicate through simple one word exchanges or sign language due to limited vocal ability but are children and really want to just play and enjoy school.
I feel creating an inviting and peaceful classroom with beautiful materials will encourage my students on a daily basis.
