A great group of kids! They are an enthusiastic group who love life and being unique! They are an active bunch, who love to move and live a healthy lifestyle.
We live in a small, rural community.
There are farms, fields, and wooded areas. My students have grown up being active outside. The majority of my students come from low-income families and do not have the opportunity to explore the world around them.
My hope for them is that I can show them the amazing world outside of their small town.
My Project
My project is to promote active learning in my students. The items on my list were requested by my students. I polled my students to see what materials they thought we were lacking. I asked them what items would help them stay active during their school day.
They wanted more items for inside recess equipment so the students can stay active even when they are not able to go outside.
Living in Wisconsin we have very cold days in the winter, if we are unable to be outside our school is not able to have inside recess in the gym so we are in our rooms or the center. The games requested will be able to be played in a small area. The cornhole game is a bean bag toss game where students try to score points by making it in the hole. The backyard game contains soft yard darts that can be throw at targets. This will allow students to get their energy out. Recess is a total of 60 minutes on a school day, these games promote healthy activity during those long winter months when we cannot go outside.
The other items they said would help them stay active during the day, would be the ability to stand while working. Many of the students feel that sitting in a chair for too long of time makes them antsy and causes difficulty while trying to work. . The wood table and metal stools will provide options for work time. They could stand next to the table. When I asked my students about how they like to work, they voiced that some of them like to stand to move their legs. The stools will provide higher seating or the ability to lean against the stool without completely sitting.
