My students need a copier and ink that will allow them to copy a piece of text (from a classmate or a published author) that inspired them to be a stronger writer, to take risks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever picked up a piece of writing and thought, "Oh...if only I could write like that!" My third graders pick up books, find ones that inspire them, borrow strategies from writers, and choose to become more powerful writers every day. Sometimes, they become mentor writers to others, too.
In a growing charter school, third graders fill their notebooks with the urban setting that surrounds them.
They write of the dogs in their neighborhood, the long bus rides to school, the corner stores. They are constantly pushing themselves to observe what's around them. They know which pieces of writing (mentor texts) inspire them. They strive to make their writing reflect more of themselves.
My Project
Your donation will make two pictures a reality.
Picture one- third grade writer reads books borrowed from the public library, finds a piece that inspires her, walks over to the copier, copies what is now her mentor text, pastes it in her notebook, and refers to it over and over as she experiments with using a new strategy she found on her own.
Picture two- third grade writer listens to classmate share his writing, shares how his writing inspired her to make a new move in her writing, and asks to make a copy to remind her to use that powerful strategy so that the next time she opens her notebook, she can be inspired to use her classmate's writing as a mentor text. All thanks to the copying machine that you are considering helping us have in our classroom.
With your generosity, my third graders can find their match, their writing mentor match... a piece of writing that will continue to teach them to take risks in recording their own experiences and ideas and be able to paste it inside their writers' notebooks.
With your support, they will be able to make copies of the writing pieces that convince them to become that writer that we all wish we could be.
