Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a public Montessori school in Dallas ISD. We have a very diverse population of students to whom we cater. In my drama classroom I compliment the Montessori method with creative choices in drama. One of the big things I focus on is Social and Emotional learning, giving the students materials to access and grow in their own emotional understanding and their social skills with peers. The drama classroom provides a safe space for the students to access their creativity and grow.
It is so beneficial and rewarding for the students to be able to learn to be creative in such a safe space.
I am always looking for new materials with which the students can experiment and be creative.
My Project
These materials will support my students in their reading comprehension and fluency. With repeated oral readings, they will develop their skills as a reader and a theater performer. Reader's Theater is a type of performance that develops the students reading fluency through repetitive oral recitation. This is a unit that will support them in their traditional classroom as well. Some authors are: Jane Austin and Charles Dickens.
Reader's Theater helps students develop their confidence in speaking while practicing proper expression, intonation, and pacing.
This will also give them an opportunity to present dramatic interpretations of plays. My students will grow so much in their reading fluency and their confidence through this Reader's Theater project.
I want to incorporate literature based theater in our classroom to encourage the students love of reading and connect the dots to the world of theater. These plays are performance opportunities based on classic works, to give the students age appropriate introductions to literature. While supporting their English Language Arts TEKS, we will also be developing our theatrical skills of performing and play analysis!
