My students are from a rural area with 85% receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Many parents are laid off as our county is not growing. My students are excited about hands-on learning.
They understand that learning is the gateway to their future careers.
They are eager to learn with tools that will later benefit them but also have fun while learning. They do not realize many times that they are learning until we have share time. Then the "oh wow" moment happens! These students are ready to learn and enthusiastic about what they are learning. They not only know they can learn in an inquisitive format in the class, they are encouraged through investigation to reach for the stars!
My Project
When students hear LEGOs, they smile and think playtime. What they don't realize is they are becoming creators and growing in scientific knowledge that they can use to help their future careers. I have 2 kits but it is not enough for the whole class to work on at the same time. I want students as a whole group to be investigating and learning through the use of these kits. Students will use these kits to not only make LEGO creations that they will program and be able to move and make sound, but also they will learn STEM objectives. Students will have pre-lessons on the movement, programming, mathematical, and science background behind their creations.
These students will get the foundations for STEM jobs of the future and be better prepared for careers in many different areas.
As teacher, I will take the roll of coach. I will encourage them to explore and problem solve to better understand the scientific process. Students will grow in confidence in an atmosphere that is not condemning of mistakes. They will have freedom to investigate each build and problem solve as needed with my encouragement and guidance.
