I love matching literature to each of my 90 students in my reading and English classroom at Denham Springs Junior High in south Louisiana. I am especially challenged to find literature for students who are convinced that reading is not for them. By having my student's complete written surveys and by simply quizzing them about things they like, I persist in finding books they will read. One of my new students who arrived in my class as an evacuee from Katrina was a particular challenge until I found that he loved scary movies and introduced him to R. L. Stine books. Now it is hard to get him to stop reading! This is a wonderful problem for a language arts teacher to have!
The wide ranging tastes in my classroom have led me to transition from a one-size-fits-all novel for the whole class to Literature Circles where students are placed in groups with other students interested in reading the same novel. This requires that I have many small sets of 5-6 novels encompassing as many genres as possible, so I can reach students on different reading levels with differing interests. To this end I have been collecting sets of novels for two years by either buying them myself or by using Scholastic book club points that I have earned.
Our new Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum requires reading to be taught by genre. My goal now is to collect enough small group sets of books to have collections for each genre. The genre units are poetry, mystery, drama and humor.
I would like to build a collection of novels for each of these genres, and because our first unit of the year is mystery, this proposal will address that genre first.
Thank you so much for considering my proposal.
