My goal is to help my students master the basic math skills to be on grade level and see real world applications of math. My biggest challenge is that they are many times at a 4th or 5th grade level when starting high school.
My students are ones that want to improve their skills and are willing to work.
They come from families ranging from factories, sales, and some who aren't able to find work at all. Our students face a variety of issues: homelessness, parents who aren't home at night due to working multiple jobs, living with other family members and a variety of other real life problems that they are too young to be facing; it is inspiring how focused they can be.
My Project
My hope is that we can get funding for 3 chromebooks to use in two ways improving basic math skills and learning programming.
I have started creating online materials that will allow students to work through guided tutorials with questions throughout checking their understanding. My room is full every afternoon beyond the school day with students who need and want help. Having technology available will allow independent practice specific to the skills they need and giving me the time to facilitate and work with multiple students.
Programming is another area of focus as it is a way to expose another avenue of mathematical thinking, building a skill that could lead to a career. Currently we have no options that introduce programming and there are some good web based tutorials that would allow them to get started.
This project would allow me to help more students who are trying to learn the skills they need to be successful in math classes and life.
Knowing basic math is something everyone needs and more so helps in furthering your education.
The programming part may introduce them to an area that could spark their interest and help guide them to pursuing a college degree or career providing them options after high school.
