Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of the 800+ students enrolled at our school have the unique opportunity of being educated within a Dual Language program. As participants in this program, our students are learning to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish. The vast majority of the students attending our school, come from low income homes. For this reason, our school is constantly striving to establish partnerships and write grants in order to bring much needed supplies, materials, and resources to our students, parents, and community at large.
My Project
Even at the early age of 5, I have heard students say that they don't like math and when a child doesn't like math, they do everything possible to avoid it. I want to change that attitude. I want my students to be excited about math. I want them to view math as a fun and exciting subject.
Most importantly, I want them to think of themselves as mathematicians.
The building blocks, number sensory tub, magnetic numbers, geometrical shapes, white boards, and other mathematical materials that are being requested will be utilized to develop engaging math centers. These math centers will promote my students' understanding that math can be found all around us. They will also help students understand that given that math is all around us, it is essential that they learn about it so that they can utilize it to their full advantage.
Your support of this project will provide my students with the stepping stones for mastering the kindergarten math curriculum.
In conclusion, these math materials will provide much needed resources for the establishment of math centers. The math centers will in turn nurture my students love of math and promote their mathematical development. Essentially, your support in funding this project will ensure that my students thrive as they go on to cultivate the foundation for the development of the skills they will need to become successful mathematicians.
