Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember learning elementary math abroad, drawing sticks and counting with rocks. I can assure you that it was not an ideal way to learn math. While my students' learning experiences may not be so dramatic as mine, they still need resources to make sense of math. I kindly ask your help to do that.
My students are growing up in poverty, and most of them have been deprived of rich and meaningful learning resources, and experiences to get a good start in math.
My 1st graders belong to a dual Spanish Immersion school located in an urban area. They are thirsty for knowledge. My students are so amazing. They both love and struggle with learning to read in two languages while learning math, science, and social science content, often in their second language.
Despite these challenges, my students are filled with energy, and they strive each day to meet our reading goal for 1st grade: to grow the equivalent to 1 1/2 years in reading, and to do it well in both English and Spanish!
My Project
My 1st graders love learning, but some mathematical concepts are harder to grasp without the visuals and hands-on support that math manipulatives can provide.
These games and math manipulatives will help them solve problems of addition and subtraction, experiment with shapes, construct amazing structures, and have fun while they do it.
These resources will make a big difference.
The opportunities to experiment and solve problems that I have envisioned will help my students to advance in math. As an added bonus, my students will find these activities to be fun, and math will become a positive experience for all.
Your help would not only benefit my current students, but allow these resources to stay in the classroom for the enjoyment of many more students in years to come.
