Mastering Math Through Movement: Wobble While You Work
Help me give my students options for flexible seating so they can optimize their learning. Today's students have different needs, and these seating options will help them be comfortable and stay focused while they work.
My school is a Title I school in Oklahoma. Title I status means that a high percentage of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches, and our families are primarily single-parent, lower-income families. Our school has a population of more than 700 students.
My students are very eager learners and deserve the best education possible.
For many of my students, school is their safe place and refuge. The items that are provided through DonorsChoose.org allow my students to bridge the gap between low-income students and other students. This allows them to meet challenging state academic standards.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them.
Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or lying down on the floor with a clipboard.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
Today's students are different learners, and most require more flexible seating than the traditional desk and chair.
By allowing students to choose how they sit and work, they take ownership of their learning and are more productive and better focused, ensuring a higher level of academic success.
The wobble cushions and balance balls will allow students who need extra movement to get the physical stimulation they need to better concentrate on their work. The portable sitting desks will give my students greater freedom to move around the room and find an area that lets them focus while helping them maintain good posture and working positions. The balance board will let those students who chose to stay at a desk have the option of movement while sitting at a traditional desk and chair.
All of these seating choices will help my students perform better and work harder during independent work time.
