I am a fifth grade teacher servicing low income students in the Cabrini Green Housing Projects in Chicago. In the past, I have noticed that many of my students are reluctant to learning math skills that are essential for their academic success. Well, no need to fear, the solution is here! I want to implement a daily choice time for my students. This is not your "do whatever you want time", but this time will be productive. During this time, students will choose a math game to play that will help them to master math skills (Place Value, Money, Fractions, Word Problems, Multiplication, Division). Not only will students be able to master math skills and have a sense of accomplishment, but also this activity will offer students the opportunity to work in cooperative groups and develop the social skills they will need in everyday life. As students play these games, they will understand math concepts better and have the basic foundation needed to build more difficult concepts upon. Who said, mastering math isn't fun?
