Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Tell me and I forget; Teach me and I remember; Involve me and I learn. - Benjamin Franklin
If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see nineteen to twenty children engaged in hands-on activities and questioning the world around them.
They try their best to accomplish the tasks provided for them, along with following the school expectations. What lies beneath the surface are children who come from a high poverty neighborhood and are provided free breakfast, lunch, and a healthy snack while at school. Some of them have just moved to the United States and do not speak English. They face more challenges in a single day than you could ever imagine and yet they still persevere. They walk into my classroom smiling and ready to learn. There are still challenging days that we require help through various strategies that include flexible seating, hands-on activities and manipulatives, and high interest texts that are on grade level, among many other things.
My Project
Young children require hands-on materials to help students build one-to-one correspondence when counting. Being able to manipulate and build shapes will help imprint abstract concepts and build a deeper understanding of shapes and how they are composed.
Students love getting to work with these materials and they are always a hit in the classroom any time of year!
The puzzles, monkeys, and bears, are a great way to practice counting from 1-30 as well and building one-to-one correspondence. The bears can also be used to teach children about conservation of numbers. The geostix and shape sorts can help students interact with shapes in hands on ways. These materials will go a long way in addition to the resources we have in the classroom already. Any chance to experience math concepts in concrete methods is beneficial to kindergarten students. We can't wait work with these materials and get counting!
