My students need hands-on math games and manipulatives in order to support our partner math stations, including a master set of Magna-Tiles, a set of addition fluency puzzles, a marble run, a "Pop & Add" game, and more.
Research shows that young students learn best through hands-on experiences. Brain research also shows that continual review of past concepts will help move the learning to long-term memory for recall in the brain. This is how we learn math in first grade!
My students are an amazing group of learners!
They inspire me each day with their desire to learn about the world around them. Their eyes sparkle as I introduce a new concept. They are the reason I come to work each day and do my personal best.
However, it is getting harder every day to provide the resources that my little learners need in order to keep up with learning methods and hands-on materials that are falling apart. The economic resources in Michigan have been very slim for education. Our community is doing its best, but funds are very limited.
My Project
Each day, we learn a whole-group lesson, have an individual practice time, and then we move to partnerships. With partners, students work on reinforcement activities that align with our current goals. Students also extend their practice with past concepts and skills.
In first grade, most of our math is hands-on and then progresses to paper and pencil methods. Discussion and talking through our methods is a large part of our work. Cooperative learning is demonstrated through our math stations (partnerships) as they play these interactive board games. Many of our games and materials are wearing out and/or do not match our current Michigan standards, so new games will create excitement and support our learning objectives. To meet this need, I am requesting a master set of Magna-Tiles, a set of addition fluency puzzles, a marble run, and several addition and subtraction games.
Your donation will support my young learners as they develop their foundational math skills.
This work will also support their social and verbal reasoning skills, by working with a partner.
