In my classroom, my goal is to create lifelong learners. I have a wonderful group of diverse first grade students. They love to read, write, calculate, create, and problem-solve, but most importantly, my students are always in need of a good challenge.
The majority of my students will require explicit instruction and countless learning opportunities to make up for the time they lost with the pandemic.
As many teachers begin to make the transition to follow the Science of Reading method to prepare our students to become great readers, I am requesting some resources to facilitate this process in my first-grade classroom.
I am requesting supplies so my students can follow the science of reading and other resources to build their phonemic awareness and phonics skills.
Students will be able to have individual letter/sound tiles to build words using the magnetic whiteboards and Elkonin Sound Boxes. Students will utilize these supplies every day during our reading time with our phonics. They will use magnet wands to identify sounds, cars to blend words, flashlights for engaging fluency, and different center activities to solidify CVC blending. These resources will allow me to reach my goal of providing explicit instruction to students in the area of phonemic awareness and phonics.
I was able to attend training and implement the Science of Reading strategies in the previous school year. However, I did not have supplies for all of the students. It is incredibly important that every student has the supplies to benefit from this method.
I strongly believe teaching reading through the Science of Reading method will help build a strong foundation for reading success. By furthering my knowledge about the Science of Reading and having the right resources in my classroom, I can work with my students to strengthen their foundation in reading.
