I teach in a urban district in which many of my students do not have the same opportunities as their peers in surrounding towns. My goal is to provide as many opportunities as I can for as many students as I can. My students are often misrepresented because of their geographical location.
I have students who love to learn, are inquisitive and kind-hearted.
The most important job I have is fostering a community of students who care about one another. This can be a challenge at times, but allowing students to see you for who you are allows them to gain trust in you and makes building that community so much easier.
My Project
In today's world of COVID, I have many students who continue to come to school in a Hybrid learning model. These students are on Google Meets between 4 and 6 times a day. I want to give my students a break from screen time and some more opportunities at hands-on activities through math manipulatives and more reading books in my classroom library. Fifth grade math is very challenging for my students and I have found that using the minimal supplies I currently have has helped their understanding of some of the abstract concepts, including decimals and fractions. I also want some fresh books to increase their interest in our upcoming U.S. Revolution unit.
