The cost of various math manipulatives is $162, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I teach 6th grade math and science in East Oakland. Many high school teachers that I have communicated with have said that a huge limiting factor for their students in high school-level math is not understanding the concept of integers (positive and negative numbers). This especially makes Algebra difficult, which is a required class for California students at the 8th grade level.
I want my students to really master these concepts. They need to be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and manipulate integers. After collaborating with veteran teachers, I have found that all of them suggest the use of manipulatives.
With these manipulatives, students will be able to work with colored pieces that represent positive and negative numbers. We will also have a set of positive and negative number dice that we can use for whole-class examples as well as small group games. There is also an integer game included that will let us review these concepts in a way that will engage all students.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
