My students need a electronic scale to replace the the out-dated triple beam balances that no longer have any connection to how material is accurately measured.
My student population is 70+% free and reduced lunch and work in the oldest school in the district. I want them to gain the skills needed to work in a modern scientific environment and using out-dated equipment from 30 years ago is not going to help them.
My students are from all over the world.
Our district has a huge immigrant population, from the Ukraine to Somalia, Nepal to Iraq, Burma to El Salvador and many countries in between. I teach a upperclassman, low skill chemistry class. For some of my students this is their first experience in a science classroom. They have a lust for knowledge and work hard even when they are still struggling to learn the language. Our school has shown incredible improvement on state tests but still lags behind in science. I want my students to have the most relevant science experience possible to get the best chance to succeed in both my classroom and the "real world" outside of high school. Modern equipment can help make that difference
My Project
Currently our school has to use out-dated but cheaper triple-beam balances. These are only seen now in high schools because their lack of accuracy and precision makes them worthless in science lab settings. In my chemistry class my students would use this scale in almost every lab we do. Learning to use a modern electronic scale is an important part of preparing for continuing success in science. Many of my students have no plans to attended high school, my class might be the last science class they ever take. I want to give them a chance to focus on the why behind what they are doing and less time trying to use a fiddly out-dated balance.
An investment in a good electronic scale is a long term investment in the field of science.
Treated respectfully an electronic scale can last for years. Please help me move my students into the modern field of science and give them the chance to work with real science equipment.
