Ms. Moran from Memphis TN is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need paint, aprons, markers, glue, colored pencils and brushes to assist them in classroom craft and art projects.

The students of HHS in Memphis have guts, talent, and a whole lot of heart. Being their drama teacher has been a blessing over these last couple of years. My students range from 9-12 graders and live in an urban area of Memphis, TN known mostly for being the home of Elvis Presley. Though famous for its tourist attraction Graceland, it is infamous for poverty, gangs, and violence. My students live in the heart of this section of town.
Every day I have the pleasure of getting to know each one of my students as artists, leaders, and survivors.
As a transition charter school, HHS has little to no funds for supplies so it comes down to the educator to fundraise for classroom curriculum needs. Though I teach drama, I tend to become the visual art teacher as well. I try to create a multimedia approach to drama in a classroom that seeks to create a culture of collaboration, creative problem solving, and self-expression.
Students will study the cultural origins and uses of masks. Students will then find inspiration within the various origins and design their own character masks. Each mask will then be created using mask facial molds and paper mache. After the masks have dried, students will then paint each mask according to their design. Students will then use their masks in multiple performance activities in order to understand the depth of character and purpose within their designs.
All of the materials requested will not only assist in mask creation, they will also become classroom essentials for most crafts and artistic design creations in the curriculum.
The markers and colored pencils are for the design process in which the students will design a mask based on a cultural design they have studied. The aprons are used to protect their uniforms. The gallons of glue will be used for 100+ students to paper mache their masks. The paints and brushes will be used to decorate their masks according to their designs.
