Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Centered in the diverse and engaging neighborhood of Williamsburg. My students are committed in putting their best foot forward. My 5th grade students are always thinking of ways to enhance their skills as writers, readers, historians, mathematicians and critical thinkers.
Interactive and engaging activities are at the center of great learning and this is something our school is great for.
We are currently implementing a program called Leader In Me to help not only serve students academically but also holistically to meet the needs of our students as a whole.
My Project
Since the last time we were lucky enough to be funded my students have been suggesting we make a new Donors Choose project for books. I am very happy that they have a renewed interest in reading.
Two of my students created a list of books that they wanted to read in Spanish and another asked if he could do the next Donors Choose for extra copies of the books we have because she wanted to read Smile but another student was already reading it.
These books are chapter books. Before these graphic novels my students would have never felt confident enough to read chapter books in Spanish. Now they are able to follow along due to the amount of visual in the books. The new round of books we receive will provide a large variety of books for my students. This way they will have more options when it when reading time comes.
