Building a community of learners is a top priority for me. This includes a Morning Meeting to set the tone for the day. The students have an opportunity to greet each other, share a success or express a concern.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and really depend on the classroom community to feel a sense of belonging.
We mainstream our special education students into the regular education classroom for more than 50% of the day. This helps all of the students to feel included and part of the community of learners.
Character education is the unspoken curriculum that all teachers use to keep the learning environment safe and a productive place to be. Problem-solving and using "I statements" are just a few strategies we practice in the classroom.
My Project
Morning Meetings are an established routine when all of your students come together, greet each other, and start the day on a positive note. It can serve a social-emotional purpose, to build class community and decrease bullying, or it can have an academic function.
In addition, Morning Meetings meet students’ needs for belonging, significance, and fun; provides students with an opportunity to practice social and emotional skills; and prepares students for the days’ learning.
The picture books are read aloud and used as a conversation starter. Students have a Morning Meeting journal that they can write about their feelings and how to be proactive with peer relations.
