Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. While 40% of our students are considered English language learners, Spanish is the home language of 90% of our students. Many of our students are struggling readers, but work hard to reach their reading and math goals during the school year.
The students are excited, engaged, curious, hard workers and are eager to become better readers and mathematicians.
During math, we are solving word problems using addition & subtraction and expressing our different methods for solving, while analyzing right and wrong answers. We are learning to count to 100, bundling groups of 10, skip counting and making connections!
My Project
Our students are inquisitive, creative and curious. In math, our tiniest mathematicians are learning to count, about the numbers around them and to make connections. The giant rekenreks, hands-on ten frames and stamps will help their math come alive! Math is so much more than just finding an answer--it's about collaborating with our fellow mathematicians, making our thinking visible and sharing our thoughts. Math isn't just in our text books, but everywhere in the world around us.
In order to be successful, we need to see what we are learning.
So many children are growing up and saying "I'm not a math person" because they struggled to make sense of their learning at a young age. To combat this, we want to develop a sense of love and engagement in mathematics so our students grow up LOVING math and fulfill their potential as engineers, mathematicians, scientists, artists and anything else they can imagine.
