Help me give my students mentor texts as models for both reading and writing workshop! We will use these picture books to help us grow on the shoulders of other authors.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a high poverty school where my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the obstacles they face, my students enjoy school. School is their safe haven... it's the constant in their life.
All students deserve the same opportunities to become successful, competent readers and writers!
Some of the students in my classroom come from homes where learning to read is not a top priority- meeting the child's basic needs of food and shelter takes precedence. Many of the families I service do not speak English as their first language. My students typically do not live in homes filled with books. All students deserve the opportunity to be immersed in a learning environment where reading is valued and enjoyed.
My Project
These picture books will be a great addition to our classroom collection. Each day, we participate in an Interactive Read Aloud where my students have the opportunity to enjoy listening to me read a book to them. During the book, we turn and talk 2-3 times and discuss our thinking. The students have opportunities to deepen their understanding of texts with this method.
I'm always looking for new books to engage my readers.
Some of the books I've chosen are projeccted Caledott winners! This means they are on a list of books that are thought to possibly win the prestigious award in January. Some of these titles include: A Big Mooncake for Little Star, Everything You Need for a Treehouse, Zola's Elephant, and Fox and Chick: The Party and Other Stories. I plan to have my students read these books and evaluate the books for the qualifications listed by the Caledecott award committee. We'll see if our top vote wins the award!
