My Students

My second graders love to solve open ended math word problems.I love them too, because they cater to the different abilities that my second grade students possess. The students love that they can try to solve the open ended word problem at their own level. No one is afraid to "give it a go". I love open ended math problems because they encourage students to think outside of the box and encourage higher order thinking skills. I get excited to see what each student chose as their problem solving strategy.

We are a high poverty school where 70% of our students receive free lunch.

We are a neighborhood school serving a very diverse community.

A common thread in my classroom is that math is COOL!!

My Project

Math journals encourage experimentation . Math journals allow every child to answer at their own level. Math journals encourage accountable talk. Math journals give students an arena to show their problem solving strategies.Problem solving is an intricate part of my daily lesson.

I need a class set of Math Journals to be an effective teacher of second grade mathematics.

Having these Math Journals would be great because the children will have all their work organized. They will be able to look back and see the progress they made! I know they will take such pride in their journals! The Math Journals are way cooler than their black and white notebooks.
