I moved to a small town in Northern Arizona on the border of the Navajo Reservation last June. Our school is designated as a Title I school per the low socioeconomic status of the students we serve. I loved working with these students so much, that I've decided to stay another year and work harder to provide a more enriching classroom experience.
Despite the many setbacks my students face, they come to school eager to learn.
Many of my students live on the reservation and ride on a bus up to 80 miles one way just to come to school every day. Then, they often go home at the end of the day to an empty house where they are expected to care for their younger siblings. Few have books or materials at home that allow them to practice the skills they learn during the school day.
It's time this changes.
My Project
By the time my students reach third grade, they should have mastered the skill of telling time. By the end of third grade, they need to master their multiplication facts. I have chosen the materials in this project to help my students master these two math concepts.
Telling time is an important skill to learn that enforces both math skills and life skills.
Accurately reading an analog clock provides students the opportunity to reinforce skills such as number sense (understanding how numbers are related to one another) and skip counting. When students can successfully tell time on an analog clock, they will be able to use clocks to practice time management and punctuality. These are life skills that will benefit them in higher education and in the work force later in life. My goal is to gift each student an analog wrist watch when they are able to master telling time on an analog clock.
By learning multiplication facts 0-12, students will be better prepared to practice applying multiplication strategies when they learn division in fourth and fifth grade. Students find more success when learning complex math concepts if they have first memorized their multiplication facts. I would like to provide each of my students with a set of flash cards that they can practice on their bus rides to and from school or at home with their siblings and parents.
