This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a public pre-k classroom and have 17 children in a full day program. Our program provides the children, most of whom come from a low income background, an opportunity to develop skills that they will need in the classroom environment before they get to a formal school setting.
Our children have a thirst for knowledge and a love of learning.
We work on answering their questions through teaching them skills such as working individually and in groups, following directions and building relationships.
My Project
The materials I'm hoping to obtain already have dedicated spaces in our classroom. Our students really enjoy using math and science materials to practice measuring, estimating, balancing, sorting, grouping, graphing and counting in developmentally appropriate ways for Pre-K.
Our students are more engaged in their learning and more co-operative with each other when they have materials that can be used in multiple ways in our learning centers.
We are wanting to use these materials to allow our students to explore their math and science concepts through play. We will be exploring counting, measuring and sorting in our dramatic play play area using some of our new materials to enact real life experiences. We will also be using some of the materials in our Discovery area (our Math and Science area) to practice graphing, sorting, estimating, exploring, balancing and counting in meaningful way to enhance our inquiry-based units of study.
I can't wait to see how our students interact with their new classroom materials.
