Each morning, I prepare our classroom for the little minds that are about to enter. Once the bell rings, I open the door and begin greeting all the faces (sometimes smiling, sometimes still half asleep) ready to start the day. Before they enter our room, my students and I greet each other with a "Good Morning!" and a hug or a high-five. I want my students to know that every day in our classroom starts brand new. No matter what may have happened yesterday or what is happening at home, each day can be as amazing as you want it to be.
Our Title 1 school is filled with students that fiercely face the many challenges they come across both at school and in their homes.
Each one of our students receives free breakfast and lunch. The vast majority of our school population is Haitian, many coming from families that found refuge here in Florida after the devastating earthquake in 2010. Even though many students are fighting against a language barrier, they still show up ready to learn, create, experiment, and most importantly try. They are showing up ready to not only change their lives, but the world around them.
These magazine will not only help me continue to provide access to quality literature for my students but the ability to use engaging texts to meet a mix of standards. The StoryWorks Jr. Magazines provide 32 pages of exciting text in a variety of genres including nonfiction, fiction, dramas, and poetry. The magazines also include paired texts which provide two texts on the same topic for comparing and contrasting, as well as grammar and vocabulary components.
All of these resources will provide my students numerous opportunities to engage in their reading and practice multiple skills all at once.
Reluctant readers will hopefully enjoy the different format and be more inspired to dive deep into the texts and find a love of reading. We will be able to engage in meaningful discussions as a class and work together to practice our skills.
