Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a group of amazing students that come from very diverse backgrounds. Although more than 82% of my students live in poverty, they come to school with the motivation to learn and succeed.
Many are the children of Mexican and South American immigrant working families that struggle to provide better lives for their children.
Every day these students amaze me with their resilience to overcome hardships and their motivation to grow and succeed both personally and academically. They leave me optimistic about our future!
We are a 6-8th grade magnet school with limited money to purchase innovative equipment to truly promote STEM skills, activities, and interest. I would love to see our students engaged in hands-on activities to inspire their interest in coding, engineering or robotics.
My Project
My students will use the LEGO kits and the standards aligned curriculum to create innovative solutions to everyday problems and design an invention and build a prototype that they can market and sell.
Through the use of these kits and collaborative teams my young engineers can work to learn about marketing strategies, budgeting and the engineering design process while participating in authentic learning experiences that are relevant, creative and engaging.
The kits, expansion parts and included curriculum allow students to work at their own pace and meets the needs of various learners. In addition, these items are designed to encourage females to participate in STEM activities.
