Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an art teacher at a school in the South Bronx with extremely talented students. I teach kindergarten through fourth grade students, and I advise our eight-graders on their portfolio selection and presentations for high school. Alone I teach 550 students. There are two other art teachers who teach the rest, 2000 students in total!
This summer I found a wonderful book called "Brown Bag Ideas From Many Cultures." This book is loaded with fascinating projects for students to make using simple materials such as brown paper and permanent markers. Each project is prefaced with historical information and gives students a greater understanding of different cultures. Unfortunately, there is no money in our school budget for art supplies. I am asking for funding to purchase markers, calligraphy pens and brown paper.
I like to connect the students' art projects with their Social Studies curriculum and these projects are ideal in that regard. Some of the projects that I would like to do include Aboriginal bark paintings from Australia, Native American shields and buffalo robes, Japanese calligraphy, African masks, and so on. There are at least 15 projects that can be accomplished this school year. All we need are the markers and paper to do it.
Thank you for considering my students for your donation.
