Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever gone hungry? Not having supplies as a student is like going hungry. It will result in catastrophic consequences in their education. Some of my students don't even bring a pencil to school.
My students are the most energetic seventh grade students who want to learn and make their teachers proud.
They are from one of the biggest districts in California. Given that, the funds that the district distributes to every school become limited. Like the district, the community in which they live in is low income. Parents don't always have the finances necessary to purchase supplies that teachers might ask for to make the class more engaging. The school provides limited supplies to teachers, resulting in teachers buying from their own pocket. Most students qualify for free/reduced lunch and most are from a minority group.
My Project
I am requesting dry erase markers and erasers. These resources will change my students positively as they will become more engaged in the lesson. Each student will receive a marker and the set of erasers would be shared among the classes. They will be used with small whiteboard activities where I will be asking the students to answer questions or work out math problems. Every student will have a small whiteboard and a marker. When I instruct the students to do so, they will rise their small whiteboards for me to check their answers. This is a fast way for me to check for understanding. With whiteboard activities the students get more engaged than them having to write on a piece of paper all the time. The set of erasers will be shared by all my classes instead of having to get tissue paper from the office to erase, which is also limited. The students will practice the concepts and have more fun opportunities to learn.
This project is important because my students' parents cannot afford to purchase "recommended" supplies for them.
Also the school cannot provide every student with a marker and eraser since its funds are limited. Without the materials, they would only write on paper and I would have to be at close proximity to students to check their work. With the materials I can quickly check all the students' work in a few seconds and they all get to be engaged and show their knowledge.
