My students, 11th and 12th graders, attend a public high school with a 50% poverty rate. We are a small school of less than 600 and approximately 50% of the students are open enrollment, leading to less funding from the state.
We have a diverse population of students, as many students from the big city seek our school for greater opportunities.
When given the right tools, my students are excited to learn and grow. They are amazing! They are the future.
My Project
Year after year, I've observed students come to school without basic necessities including snacks, pencils, folders, and markers. When it is time to completing projects, they may not have markers, paints, poster boards or notebooks. Students and their families are not able to afford basic school supplies, and snacks. This can be embarrassing for adolescents who are trying to get through their school day, fit in and not be rejected by their peers. We know that chronic hunger seriously undermines kids’ physical and mental development, increases behavioral problems, encourages risky behavior and has lasting, detrimental effects on academic achievement and later job performance.
