Markers and Glue Sticks, Please!

Help me give my students the basic supplies that allow them to be creative when completing assignments in their interactive notebooks. Markers and glue sticks are always in high demand because we use these items daily.

My Students

Students come to school daily with a variety of learning disabilities. These children are amazing! Many of them are second language learners and also struggle with many other challenges while learning. They are all sweet and caring young people with a true desire to be successful. As with many urban districts, funding is always a problem. We do not always have materials needed to aid with student understanding. The students come to us with a range of challenges including being newcomers, poverty, homelessness, emotional, social issues, and learning disabilities. They require devotion and support to nurture their inner desire to learn and to appreciate the value of an education. Having materials that support students visually would be amazing. When students enter a well organized, clean and prepared classroom, they immediately feel the support and enthusiasm for learning. Many of my students do not have the support needed at home. Therefore, the time and the environment in which they spend most of their day is so crucial. We have to make every minute count.

My Project

If you have ever taught in a middle school classroom, you know that items such as markers, glue sticks and modeling dough seem to vanish. Having the necessary consumables in class supports middle schoolers with creativity and developing their activities and assignments. Many of my students would not have access to these items if I did not provide them. Having the materials to draw and create projects allows many students to express their learning, especially those with learning disabilities. The challenges that many urban schools face with budget cuts are the necessary funding for the basics. These supplies are always in high demand. Many of the supplies that most take for granted are often scarce.

Markers, glue sticks, and modeling dough supports the learning process in our class.

Our math and science classes have and use Interactive Notebooks. The assignments or activities that students complete in their notebook require adding color. When completing an activity students tend to remember the material when there is color and it was created with personal touches. It also helps students to be more focused and engaged in the activity when they have the proper materials to use.
